You need to configure two options for that:

Go to /Configuration/Preferences/Display/Summaries.

On the 'Folder list' tab, activate the option 'Open last opened folder on
start-up'.

On the 'Message list' tab, click the 'Set message selection on entering
folder' button, and put 'last opened email' at the top of the 'Current
selections' list.
