[Users] Claws Mail (Windows) always freezing

Nearly every time I go to check my e-mail in Claws (every couple days)
it is frozen.  I close it because I know from experience it will not
unfreeze.  There is nothing to indicate why it froze or what it was
doing.  When I reopen it, sometimes it is still freezing and I have to
re-close it.  Sometimes it fixes itself if I leave it for a long time.
Then I notice it hasn't downloaded anything for 24-48 hours since it
froze.  What is the cause of this and how can I fix it?
