Presumably that is referring to gnome settings? (Claws Mail is
desktop-neutral.)
This will only work if you've configured Claws Mail to use the system
defaults.
See /Configuration/Preferences/Message View/External Programs.
You need to have 'Use system defaults when possible' checked.

If you have that option checked, yet it still does not work, then this
suggests something wrong outside of Claws Mail. You can check using the
command line with this command:

xdg-open https://www.claws-mail.org

If xdg-open is failing, then you can configure a web browser in Claws Mail,
using the same Configuration page. (Or, of course, find out what is wrong
with xdg-open.)
