I expect you know this, but for others that may not;

In the 'olden days' of dial-up internet, BBS'ing and what-not, stripping
trailing spaces was common practice to save bandwidth and, therefore,
cost.  Cheapskate ways of space stripping paid no heed to sig
separators.
