gettext-0.21 and gettext-tools-0.21 are installed. 

Ricardo Mones gave me the hint I needed. The .git directory is required
to build Claws Mail. A first for me, keeping that directory did the
trick. I normally remove that when creating a tarball from git. 

Claws Mail compiles to completion with perl 5.36. Thanks!
