I use the Linux combo "Ctrl+Shift+u" then enter up to 8 hex digits for
Unicode followed by a Return. So a smiley face is 1F642:

Ctrl+Shift+u1f642Enter🙂

This works on old Debian in most of my Apps. Have to keep a cheat
sheet around with a few Unicodes listed though...
