I am sending this from the Debian testing virtual machine, Claws and Thunderbird work perfectly. Since it's also not an issue with Debian stable, I will have to guess that the issue rests with the OS itself (Debian Sid/unstable). Guess that's why they refer to it as 'unstable'? :) If I eventually know more, I will definitely post it here.
