OK, I may now have the answer. Right above the upper right corner of
the message pane I can see tiny little bar, about a quarter of the size
of a hyphen. It can't be more than a few pixels. It's so tiny there's
no way to hit it with the mouse pointer (I tried, repeatedly for
several minutes). And it's so small because my monitor is UHD (4K),
2160p, on a 17" laptop.

If I'm right, then either I need this icon to be several times larger,
or I need to 'hit' it with a keyboard shortcut. For sure I can't touch
it with the mouse. Or maybe someone can think of another solution.
