[Users] Changing colors in inbox display

When I attempt to change the background of the inbox (and other) message
display (not the text) I do get a flash, but the color remains the same.

It may be just my system, but black text on blue background is hard for me
to make out. Any way to change this, other than Preferences->Color, which
is not effective?
