All this stuff is *very* mysterious to me.  As a precaution (???) I
checked on the settings in question.  For both of my accounts, in
particular for my gmail account, both the send and receive
authentication methods are currently set to "Automatic" rather than
"OAUTH2".

Is this something that is likely to bit me on the arse in future?
Things are working, *at the moment*.
