Tried finding something on the website for how to configure OAuth2 without
success.  May be a good thing if it nudges me to dump gmail... :)

On the config panel, am I correct to assume Client ID is user at gmail.com
and Client Secret is that accounts password?  
BTW, shouldn't a secret field hide the secret?

Using those assumptions, the request returns:
  Authorization Error
  Error 401: invalid_client      <== claws-mail?
  Client missing a project id.   <==   "    "

Did I fail to find a setup guide somewhere?  Been too busy to follow the
long OAuth2 threads; sorry.
