I am not sure from where you have this info. When you take look at
https://github.com/k9mail/k-9/commits/main you can see, that latest
commit is from yesterday and this doesn't sound as dead project for me.

Sure, the K-9 has not storm in its development, they do not release new
version every week, but this is dev model which i like more than
releasing new version on every comment's typo fix, only to raise
version number...
