Yes, in the Preferences window, there are tabs which I did not see at first. 
 
In this case: 
 - Configuration > Preferences 
 - Display > Summaries 
 - And now shows up a tab list, and the second tab, titled "Message list" is the one sought for.

Everything can be configured in claws-mail.
You can select the latest mail if that's what you want.
You need to spend some time checking the options.
Try Configuration / Preferences for what you want.
