On the debian side, there are two changes that may be needed to access
the current alternative:

Firstly, python3. Much is written about this elsewhere. I am not sure
it is needed immediately but it will be necessary one day.

Secondly, GTK is now accessed from pygobject, which means the debian
packages python-gi (or python3-gi) and gir1.2-gtk-2.0 (or later -3.0 if
needed).

I don't remember how far along either migration (python3 or gtk3) claws
is, but I hope this gives an introduction to what's changing.
