I can confirm that, and specifically the 'less secure apps'.   I have
Claws on my laptop, with mail also stored on my laptop, and POP access
to my ISP's mailserver (orcon.net.nz) and also to two Gmail accounts.   

I only use webmail/browser access if I'm away from home and don't have
my #1 laptop with me, in which case I leave all emails un-deleted
(except spam) on the ISP/Gmail, and my laptop downloads them all when I
get home.   Sent messages, I just send a copy to myself, which saves me
figuring out how to (or just plain forgetting to) get them out of the
ISP/Gmail's 'sent' box and into my 'sent' box.
