It's exactly the same for me.

Tried with a fresh git pull from git://git.claws-mail.org/claws.git
branch gtk3. Latest commit 0c372bd7eb9d35427664e65876b99ac5afde2051
which describes itself as version 3.16.0git947 .

I'm on Ubuntu 20.4 but the same happened on 19.4 and 19.10. I used to
use Claws debs but installed this version with 'make install' into
--prefix=/usr

I also reset the icon-prefs and even tried to delete the toolbar_*.xml.

There is none of the typical gtk warnings that you would see in stdout.
