Thanks for the link. It seems I never needed this, and so wasn't aware
of it.

Although I have no idea how this may have happened the only
possibility was that I accidentally assigned dot as a key to something
in the window where I write mails. Additionally, as things are ok now I
must have accidentally have deleted that key assignment.

All very strange, but this is the only logical explanation of what must
have happened.
