Raphael's patch was missing some important build elements, specifically in
configure.ac and src/plugins/python/Makefile.am, as well as leaving a few other
things in place which should have been removed.

With acknowledgement of Holger's comment, Raphael's patch has been fixed and
applied to the gtk3 branch. The commit can be seen here:

There is also a follow-up commit where I remove some duplication:
