I would like to add that the tray icon does work seamlessly on XFCE, so it's a
GNOME-specific issue.

I have found a workaround though: the deprecated TopIcons-plus
(https://github.com/phocean/TopIcons-plus) makes the claws-mail icon show up
again. On Ubuntu 20.04 with GNOME shell 3.36, it was necessary to compile it
myself.
