I explained badly; sorry. I know this problem has plagued me in the
past in specific situations which I cannot remember. To start with, I
should have said selecting from the 'message header pane', not the list
(impossible). The From, To, Subject fields (but not their headings) can
be selected.
After on-the spot experimenting, I find:
* If you can click the destination window to raise it, the selection
sticks & pastes.
* If you use Alt/Tab to swap windows, the selection goes.
* This does not happen with the main message pane!
* Without exhaustive testing, it is only the ALT key which kills the
selection from the header pane!

Perhaps the thread originator can clarify other situations where the X
buffer disappears.
