Gmail refusing connection to Claws Windows 32bit & 64bit IMAP and POP

I have set this up four times over with accurate configuration details each
time on Claws end and Gmail end, no go each time I try to connect and get
mail. I
I get an authentication error "Username and password not accepted".
I get the same thing using Thunderbird IMAP.

Is this a problem of Gmail's end or is there some Claws configuration
detail I might have overlooked.
