Here's an update on this problem.

Using the python sample code found here 

https://www.tutorialspoint.com/python/python_imap.htm

After modifying the code to use my verizon email credentials I am able to
connect to imap.aol.com and successfully retrieve email.

So this is another example of IMAP working fine except when using ClawsMail.
