I was going to suggest that you try to clone
https://git.claws-mail.org/readonly/claws.git instead of the git://
URL, suspecting that your ISP is giving you lesser quality of service
on ports other than the standard services (git uses 9418, IIRC, and
you cloned Firefox via HTTPS). It's probably still worth a try, although
I expect you'd get results similar to those you got when trying to
download the tarball.

As a workaround, I can suggest that you clone from
https://gitlab.com/shaib/claws which I configured to mirror the main
repository -- or, as Colin suggested, Olaf's mirror on GitHub. 

Either way, have you noticed your own ISP? I have just tried to clone
from Israel (whose feeds go through the EU) and I got 3.5M/s. You
have reported getting similar speeds from hosts in the US, and nobody
else seems to be complaining; do you have any reason to think the
problem is with the Claws infrastructure ISP, rather than your own?
