Claws-Mail 3.16.0-137-g5a69a4741 on Fedora 27.
When I [Edit] a sieve script using ManageSieve, a windows appears with the
sieve file contents and the sieve name in the title bar.
As soon as I actually change something, the sieve name in the title bar is
replaced by garbage. When I subsequently try to [Save] the sieve script, it
gives an error: Error in MANAGESIEVE command PUTSCRIPT: Invalid UTF-8
character in quoted-string. The script can no longer be saved.

Hm, nice catch, I can see that happening here too. I'll have a look at
fixing it later today (unless someone beats me to it *wink* *wink* :) ).

When I run autogen.sh on Fedora 28 using the current git tree I get:
checking for library containing encrypt... no
configure: error: 'encrypt'-function not found.
Anyone have any ideas on this? I am assuming it is either a library
version mismatch or something similar due to the updated OS.

I guess it's because f28 is using libxcrypt.
I use fedora too but have not upgraded yet. I will take a look at
this when I do, if no-one beats me to it.

The rawhide claws mail package spec file already does that, IIRC.

Well it sounds like you know about it and a fix will appear once a
suitable patch is available.
Thanks, it's just a pity that it went past under my radar and I try to
pay attention to these things as much as I can.

Looks like I was a bit too hasty when fixing some memory leaks a while
ago, and the script name was being released from memory too soon.
Should be fixed in git now, thanks for bringing it up.

Hey guys . . . new list subscriber, first email . . .
please be nice.
I have CM set up with three accounts -- took some doing, but all are
working well (all imap).
The thing that baffles me is this: when I switch from one INBOX to the
next, it seems that a randomly selected header is selected in the
header window.
Then, I have to scroll all the way to the top.
I've tried every sort I can think of, marked all emails "read." But CM
insists.
If I delete the favored message, it picks another.
The only exception occurs when new mail is in the INBOX -- then CM will
go to the top.
Any ideas?

Try applying the attached crypt-nettle patch, it comes from F28's srpm.
You might want other patches as well, check the attached .spec file.

Subject: [Users] Intermittent hangs when using Claws-Mail
Message-ID: <20180503120548.53cef293@mydesk.domain.cxm>
Hi all,
I'm getting intermittent hangs while using Claws-Mail. Typically I'm
clicking around then the video becomes unresponsive. Dragging around a
dialog box leaves a trail of gray. I can usually kill it by clicking
the window close command, waiting several seconds, and confirming I
want it closed. But occasionally I need to send a kill command.
In every case, I'm perfectly able to Alt+Tab or workspace navigate to
other apps. It's not nearly as serious as a Firefox catastrophe.
This seems to happen about 4 times a day: Some
days more, some days less.
This problem started somewhere between 8 and 4 days ago. My package
manager tells me I've had this same version of claws-mail (3.16.0)
ever since 2017-12-25.
I'm using Void Linux 64 bit. Here's some of my info:
[slitt at mydesk ~]$ claws-mail -v
Claws Mail version 3.16.0
[slitt at mydesk ~]$ uname -a
Linux mydesk 4.16.4_1 #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Apr 25 19:50:33 UTC 2018
x86_64 GNU/Linux [slitt at mydesk ~]$ grep ^exec ~/.xinitrc
exec /usr/bin/openbox-session
[slitt at mydesk ~]$ head -n1 /proc/meminfo
MemTotal: 15598608 kB
[slitt at mydesk ~]$
From now until I solve this problem, I'll be running claws-mail from a
terminal so I can view the terminal's output. I'll also be looking more
closely at log files. Just for fun I'll do a memory test and a disk
test too. I'll let you know when I discover something.
Thanks,
SteveT

Hi Ken, welcome on board!
Open Configuration|Preferences... and select Display/Summaries. In that
screen, there's a box "Message List" and in it a button "set default
selection when entering a folder". Click it -- either what you see will
explain the behavior, or you'll be able to change things to your
liking, or you'll be able to come back here with more details and
people can help you more.
Also, please say what version of Claws Mail you're using, and on which
platform -- some behaviors change[1] across versions and operating
systems.
HTH,
Shai.

If I get time later I will see if this works, assuming I can get my
mock builds to work because something has broken that too. I want to be
able to preserve fancy until something better is available but I need
to be able to build webkitgtk to do that.

Good evening.
Error occured also on previous PC on Windows 7 (so I think we can exclude
problem with hardware). By some random amount of time, sometimes few times in
an hour, sometimes 2-3 times per whole day Claws just crashes. Without moving
his windows, browsing email or anything. I got only description from Event
Viewer. If you want me to gather any information please type it, so I will do.
Best regards.

Hello!
Steps to reproduce the bug:
1. Fresh open claws-mail
2. Now open "Account preferences" window (Configuration > Preferences for
current account)
3. Now close the "Account preferences" window
You'll see no other window popping up. Totally expected UI behavior.
4. Now, open "Edit accounts" window (Configuration > Edit Accounts)
5. Close the "Edit accounts" window
6. And now open the "Account preferences" window (Configuration > Preferences
for current account)
You'll see "Edit accounts" window popping up automatically. I think this is
because "Edit accounts" window is in cache (that's good for speed) but why to
invoke the "Edit accounts" window from cache when "Account preferences" window
is closed?
This is not at all expected UI behavior.

Don't manage account list focus state when closing an account edit window,
when this window has been called from main window's "Preferences for
current account" menu item.
Closes bug #4022: Closing "Account Preferences" window opens "Edit
Accounts"
window if "Edit Accounts" window has been opened before at least once.

Rework and simplify how compose_queue() return values are handled
Also closes bug #3960 - Sends unencrypted emails when encryption fails
because we now return from compose_queue() with an error when
that happens, instead of ignoring it.

Hey Paul,
sorry for the radio silence, had a lot on my plate, so I regrettably lost sight
of the issue... be that as it may, I just checked - there was nothing set at
'Outgoing encoding' - I then tried setting it to UTF-8 and that seems to have
fixed it!
For what it may be worth, my locale value is:
"Locale: de_DE.UTF-8 (Zeichensatz: UTF-8)"
Thanks so much for your help, much appreciated!

Hello!
Please find the attached patches which aim to fix some small issues like
declaring variable and functions only if they are needed (using #ifndef), using
fabs() instead of abs() for `double` argument etc.
Please let me know if something needs to be fixed/amended.

Hello!
src/addr_compl.c uses following functions from deprecated GCompletion API:
1. g_completion_new()
2. g_completion_set_compare()
3. g_completion_clear_items()
4. g_completion_free()
5. g_completion_add_items()
6. g_completion_complete()
As the docs[0] say, these functions are deprecated and may be we should use
GtkEntryCompletion[1] instead.

Hello,
I'm trying to create a "dark" configuration for Claws, and I've found some
information on Internet to start with, so I have now played with the folder
list and message list (using the widget_class "*GtkSCTree*"), and the
message view (using the widget_class "*GtkText*").
Could someone provide some more help, with details on the other widgets
that are used inside Claws, and where they are used ?
For example, menus, preference, the top items of the New message
composition windows are not affected by my changes. It would be great to
have some list so that people could easily prepare GTK-2 theme files ;)
Thanks
Paul

The patch misses a second NM_CHECK_VERSION that needs to be removed, too, or
else the code would fail.

OK, so I have been able to patch the git tree and then rerun autogen.sh
successfully, so it looks like these patches are good that far.
However, if I want to create an unpatched tarball using make dist and
then use the standard rpm spec file to build the packages (which is
what I normally do) then of course autogen.sh doesn't complete as
before.
I don't quite know what I need to do to sort this out, it's probably
some magic with autotools that I haven't worked out yet.
I have temporarily hacked the Fedora 28 spec file to user pre-patched
sources, I'm also in the process of building cairo and webkitgtk
packages so that I can use the fancy plugin.
Are we having fun yet?

I managed to hack it all together and now have git152 with the fancy
plugin loaded and working. Nasty hacks all round, but I can live with
it for webkitgtk and the cairo packages built with gl enabled.
Any help with how to make it work with the git version without using
the Fedora 28 patches before the rpmbuild step would be appreciated.

Many thanks Michael! Your patch builds fine here in Debian stable, so I'll use
it to patch the Debian package and avoid its removal from testing.
Unless anybody has any objection I think I'll push it to master soon (hopefully
during this week).

Hi !
Under my Xfce4 i experience "Failed to execute default Mail Reader"
"Input/uotput error." when trying to open mailto: links from Palemoon
or Firefox. Opening web links with Palemoon in Claws Mail works well.
Under "exo-preferred-applications -c" default mail application is set
to Claws Mail.
In same time /usr/share/xfce4/helpers/sylpheed-claws.desktop shows
up
X-XFCE-CommandsWithParameter=/usr/lib/xfce4/exo-1/exo-compose-mail-1
sylpheed %B "mailto:%s";
which i changed to
X-XFCE-CommandsWithParameter=/usr/lib/xfce4/exo-1/exo-compose-mail-1
claws-mail %B "mailto:%s";
with no effect.
Does anyone have experiences with similar problem ?

Why not just use Palemoon's prefs to set mailer to CM, rather than XFCE's
exo system? Saves the extra step.

That way claws-mail process becomes child of Palemoon, but Palemoon
here is firejailed and mail profile is not visible to the browser i.e.
claws starts new account wizard.
Therefore still sticking to the exo ecosystem.
Thanks !

Crash backtrace
This one is not directly reproducible (at leas had not found the way to do it)
but it has been happening here lately several times already, filtered output
from dmesg:
[887818.749509] claws-mail[26266]: segfault at 1 ip 00007f70012be95a sp
00007ffd8d230fb0 error 4 in libgobject-2.0.so.0.5000.3[7f700128a000+52000]
[1816326.205629] claws-mail[9140]: segfault at 1 ip 00007f5dcf20395a sp

00007fff278f1920 error 4 in libgobject-2.0.so.0.5000.3[7f9bc3115000+52000]
After that I decided to run it under gdb for a while and just catched it again
today. I think it happened while trying to toggle message view with 'v' key,
but surely requires some other condition happening (I use 'v' key much more
often than it crashes ;). Attached the gdb's backtrace.
Thanks in advance,

Could not find yet why container (mainwin->hpaned) is 0x1. This could look like
a mistyped assignment or a wrong memory write (data corruption). Running
valgrind didn't show anything specific yet, excepted what I commited yesterday.
Do you think this crash has been recently introduced?

Could it be a bad cast from a pointer to a struct?

FYI I cannot reproduce the crash with 3.16.0 (built from the same conditions).

Something in quicksearch_show() overwrites the beginning of the MainWindow
object in memory (hpaned is the first member in the struct). I tried changing
the member order, and whichever member is first, gets overwritten.
Possibly an off-by-one error somewhere.

Can you share your current gtkrc-2.0 file? That may make it easier to
assist you.

Hello,
Apologies for time-lag on this issue.
I finally noticed (DoH!) that the message concerned all come from
'change.org'.
Double checked all filters etc. etc. as suggested by those who kindly
took part in this.Nothing found and nothing found by the service provider either. So I
have unsubscribed this particular bunch (as my partner does not want
the emails anyway) but so far she is still getting them albeit into
my 'inbox'.
So we can close this as unresolved I reckon.
Thanks for the help,
Regards,
Paul.

Hello
I want to define a action: Move a mail to account-local folder.
Like move to the trash bin, which is also on every account.
Is this possible? What is the syntax notation for such a folder?
Greetings
Michael

Message-ID: <20180512105802.1916364e@kenslpc>
Hi,
When saving attachments, claws replaces spaces in the filename with 'X' .
Is there a config item somewhere that I can use '_' instead of 'X' ?
I can't seem to find it in clawsrc.
I'm using claws 3.11.1 which is the latest on LM 17.3 repos.
Thanks.

I'm afraid I can't reproduce this, at least not w/ a fresh Claws Mail
version (but I doubt I would reproduce it w/ 3.11.x). It doesn't
substitute spaces in filenames at all and I'm not aware of any

Thanks for the response. It definitely happens but I don't have an attachment that misbehaves right now.
I'll forward the next instance of this bug privately to you if it contains anything sensitive.
Basically the attachment gets saves and any spaces in it are replaced with capital X.

If you use the UI, as described below, then you will see the syntax
notation when you are done.
Go to /Configuration/Actions
Enter a 'Menu name'
Click/Select the 'Filter action' radio button.
Click the 'Edit filter action' button.
In the 'Action configuration' dialogue, select 'Move' as the 'Action'.
In the Destination entry click the 'Select...' button, and select
your required folder in the 'Select folder' dialogue.
Click the 'Add' button.
Click the 'OK' button.
Click the 'Add' button.
Click the 'OK' button.

My understanding of Michael's description is different -- IIUC, when he
says "account-local" and "on every account, like move to trash", I
think his "account" actually means "mailbox", so that means, in details:
- He would like to define, on every mailbox, a specially-named folder;
for example, "reminders"; so that there's a #mh/Mail/reminders and
also a #imap/Acct/reminders and a #mh/OtherBox/reminders if he has
the respective mailboxes
- The he'd like to have an action "make reminder", which moves a
message from its current folder to the "reminders" folder in the same
mailbox, rather than just one "global" reminders folder, which is
what is described in Paul's answer.
To the best of my knowledge, there is currently no such functionality
in Claws Mail. I suspect one may be able to create it using the Python
or Perl plug-ins, but that would require writing some code.
I also seem to recall someone asking about custom folder types, which
seems to be related, but I can't locate that at the moment, and as far
as I recall, that doesn't exist either.
HTH,
Shai.

I have a similar question:
Claws 3.16.0git163 - Slackware Linux 14.2
Can I control which message is selected next when I click "Trash" (or press the Delete
key) on the current message in the message list ? I have my messages sorted by Date.
The behaviour at the moment seems to be to select the previous message in the list. I
would like to select the next unread (or at least next) message in the list.
Cheers

I just had that question answered not too long ago. To get Claws Mail
to advance to the next message after right-clicking the message in
the message list and choosing "Move to trash" or after highlighting
the message in the message list and clicking the Trash button in the
toolbar or pressing the Delete key:
1) Close Claws Mail.
2) Edit the clawsrc file in the hidden .claws-mail directory.
3) Find: next_on_delete=0
4) Change it to: next_on_delete=1
5) Save the file.
It might be a good idea for the devs to consider making this a
checkbox for us to tick in the settings somewhere in the future. For
now, I have these instructions backed up in case I reinstall.

Due an administrative mistake my account was wiped from my local imap
server. So I lost all the mail folders serviced by dovecot.
On my client system, where I run claws, all data (I assume) is still in
claws' imapcache folders.
Is there a way to reconstruct the dovecot folders using the imapcache
folders?

Probably, yes. You can first copy the whole directory structure
(~/.claws-mail/imapcache/$SERVER/$ACCOUNT/) to another directory (like
~/IMAP-backup) and then add this directory as an MH mailbox, from the
"/File/Add mailbox/MH" menu.
You'll then have a copy of your emails locally, and will be able to
copy back everything to the IMAP server using Claws Mail, drag and
dropping the root folders. It's probably going to take some time but
should work.

Thanks Charles,
From what I understand there is probably a vulnerability in PGP
decryption routines that might leak private keys if triggered by a
maliciously crafted encrypted message.
Given that Claws Mail automatically asks for the private key passphrase
upon opening an encrypted email, and that GnuPG Agent might provide it
automatically if enabled, the safe course of action is to unload PGP
plugins until fixed GPG packages are available in your distribution.

Good suggestion! And it works like a charm. I now have all old messages
recovered. It will take some effort to move everything into the correct
place, but at least the losses are minimal.

the discussion continues, eg. here
https://lists.gnupg.org/pipermail/gnupg-users/2018-May/060323.html
is stated that:
"
GnuPG will warn you the message was not integrity protected.
Your email client should see this warning and refuse to render the
message."
I tried commands to produce message without integrity check, provided
on this link and result is, that CM ignores mentioned warning and shows
me decrypted content of the message (at least for PGP/Inline). Is it OK?
CM displays message and warning is lost at all (at least i was not
able to find it)... But the RFC 4880 says:
Any failure of the MDC indicates that the message has been modified
and MUST be treated as a security problem. Failures include a

If someone want to try it itself (or to correct me), here are commands
which i used (i have local mailserver, but anyone can paste produced
output to MUA and post it):
echo ahoj | gpg --armor --recipient your at email --cipher-algo 3DES
--disable-mdc --encrypt --sign | mail your at email
Mail was sent and gpg produces warning:
gpg: WARNING: encrypting without integrity protection is dangerous
Decrypting produces warnings too (simple replace "mail XY" with "gpg"
in last piped command):
gpg: WARNING: message was not integrity protected

Apologies if i wasn't clear. But i don't have a problem with the
direction in which 'n' and 'p' move.
The problem i'm having is that they don't display the message to which
they have moved.
A workaround is to press the space bar after 'n' or 'p', but that's a
little clumsy.

Easy:
Configuration -> Preferences -> Display -> Summaries
'Open message when selected'
- Always
- When opening a folder
- When displaying search results
- When selection next or previous message using shortcuts
- When deleting or moving messages
- When using directional keys

Interesting. It doesn't offer the option that I would have needed in
this version of Claws Mail, so it's good that I managed to do it in
the config file, but it's got some useful-looking abilities. I
installed it and will continue to do so with future versions. Thanks.

I think we both did it from within the Claws Mail settings, or it was
the default in the older versions we both remember not having to do
this with. It's good that we currently have these instructions,
though, and apparently won't need them once our operating systems
update to the latest one.
Meanwhile, I'm just very relieved to have it advancing again. I like
to look through my messages before deciding what to get rid of, lock
the ones I want to keep, and then rapid-fire mark the rest for
deletion one by one with the Delete key or the Trash icon. Until I
learned of the config file fix, I wasn't able to do that any more in
this version of Claws. Sometimes you don't realize how convenient a
seemingly minor task is until you can't do it any more.

The main vector for using the vulnerability is HTML mail, which Claws
does not support by default. As far as I could see, there was no
specific reference to the HTML plugins; as far as I understand, Claws
with an HTML plugin (like Fancy) should get the same score as, e.g.
KMail (that is, vulnerability can be abused but requires user
interaction to do so).

Message-ID:
http://www.thewildbeast.co.uk/claws-mail/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=4026
Bug ID: 4026
Summary: Impossible to use 'F10' as a hotkey
Classification: Unclassified
Product: Claws Mail
Version: 3.16.0
Hardware: PC
OS: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Component: Other
Assignee: users at lists.claws-mail.org
Reporter: removed-gdpr at example.com
STR:
1. Close CM
2. Run Clawsker
3. In "Hotkeys" tab assign the following hotkeys to switch between layouts:
Menu/View/Layout/Standard - F9
Menu/View/Layout/WideMessageList - F10
4. Check if assignment has been set:
[~]: grep -i layout ~/.claws-mail/menurc
...
(gtk_accel_path "/Menu/View/Layout/Standard" "F9")
(gtk_accel_path "/Menu/View/Layout/WideMessageList" "F10")
...
5. Run CM
EXPECTED:
F9 and F10 should work as assigned.
ACTUAL:
F9 works but pressing F10 always unfolds the 'File' menu and never changes the
layout. Assigning another key (e.g. F8) to switch to WideMessageList works but
F10 doesn't seem to work for anything.

I'm not sure if we should mess with the in-built GTK+ default keybindings, in
order not to break other users' expectations, but if so, this would be a way to
do it.

To be honest, i miss something - the DES3 cipher has not MDC at all,
when i send email with AES without MDC, the CM correctly displays
warning ("Decryption failed") and shows encrypted content of message
only.
I did similar test with latest Thunderdird & Enigmail (for AES
without MDC), and it shows warning, but shows decrypted message.

Claws does have a html to text button. I assume that is not enough due to the user interaction requirement.

A couple of weeks ago my ISP implemented a new mail filter, and now all the
mail from this mailing list disappears into a Junk bucket.
Not surprisingly, according to the ISP it is the mailing list software
that is to blame.
I have attached the headers of such a mail message, do you see anything
unusual that can/should be fixed? And who should/can fix it?
Thanks.

Does the ISP's system not allow for whitelisting/training of their spam
detection software?
Further, the CM list is run on mailman, a de facto standard.

DKIM errors... I had to configure my MTA and MUA(CM) to ignore DKIM
errors and flag those messages via color. About 40% of this list's
messages would not reach me otherwise. Raised the issue on 2/16/18; but
was blown off as "off topic"...

From what I understand, the Efail attack works when the MUA
concatenates multiple HTML parts for display:
https://www.ghacks.net/2018/05/14/openpgp-and-s-mime-vulnerability-efail-discovered/
Even when using an HTML-rendering plugin like Fancy, Claws Mail only
displays one HTML part at a time and does not concatenate them.
Therefore I think it is completely safe. I'll ask the GnuPG people just
to make sure.

As you can see, Claws is safe. Werner goes on to say that S/MIME is at
greater risk than PGP, but even then, Claws, The Bat! and a couple of
others are safe.
Further, talks are underway on the GnuPG list to determine what can be
done, if anything, to mitigate against any potential damage from efail.
From what I understand (not too much; most of it is quite technical),
it looks hopeful.

This is true for the first attack vector.
But with the 2nd attack vector cipher-text of know clear-text can be
changed. This might be noticed because the signature will be wrong but
Claws will display the message nevertheless and only have a 'sig
broken' written underneath it. And also you might have an encrypted but
not signed mail or the attacker simply strips the signature away
(possible in S/MIME-case).
An example for such a tempering is in
https://efail.de/efail-attack-paper.pdf
page 4 right column. Further down they propose to start with the most
often included "Content-type: multipart/signed" as known clear-text
(Figure 5). But it could be anything. Some companies have always the
same headlines in mails etc. . It would be hard to change something not
at the beginning of the mail because you usually don't know the exact
location.
In the OpenPGP case there is some anti-tempering mechanism called 'MDC'
so a changed cipher-text might be noticed. But because of compatibility
reasons it is quiet difficult to parse the gnupg output correctly and
decide what to do (PGP didn't support it for some time). This is what
Werner Koch referred to here:
https://lists.gnupg.org/pipermail/gnupg-users/2018-May/060315.html
A full solution for Claws as I understand it, can really only be to not
send any request to any server mentioned in a mail. (not loading
img, css, js, embed in HTML, not sending URLs to online virus
checkers...). But this should be the case for privacy reasons anyway.
iirc in the past the webkit plugin sometimes requested stuff over the
wire although the user didn't click 'load remote content'. But I can't
remember the details.

I think this is only true without html-plugin. Otherwise it should be
the same as KMail.

Yes, that's what the Gpgme developers just told me.

This document specifies the conventions for using Message
Authentication Code (MAC) encryption with the Cryptographic Message
Syntax (CMS) authenticated-enveloped-data content type. This mirrors
the use of a MAC combined with an encryption algorithm that's already
employed in IPsec, Secure Socket Layer / Transport Layer Security
(SSL/TLS) and Secure SHell (SSH), which is widely supported in
existing crypto libraries and hardware and has been extensively
analysed by the crypto community.
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/rfc6476/
I don't know if this is already implemented. It was suggested as a solution for
security issue with s/mime lately:
"The problem with S/MIME implementations missing integrity protection
is serious and we hope that vendors will quickly agree on implementing
RFC6476 or something similar. This seems to be the most interesting
finding, as it cannot be resolved quickly and it reminds everybody
to be careful with contents that can become active as a backchannel
or exploit code."

Thanks for your great work!

Add SOCKS proxy support, ported from Sylpheed/LibSylph, version 2
Attaching an updated patch:
- rewritten SOCKS4 support to use getaddrinfo() instead of obsolete
gethostbyname()
- no need for session_connect_full(), we can set the session->socks_info member
directly and use that
- fixed some bugs in handling errors from proxy server
- added some connection-related debug output to hopefully help while
troubleshooting connectivity

EXPECTED BEHAVIOR
1. pressing "d" in a focused message window should delete the message and close
the window
2. no segfault
OBSERVED BEHAVIOR
1. Yesterday I opened a received message in a new window to work on it later.
After work has been done I pressed "d" to delete it, however the currently
selected message in the main window was deleted.
I clicked the paper bin symbol and hit ESC to delete the message and close the
window. The window showed a text saying the message has been moved to trash.
2. Additionally claws caught a segfault:

This only happens with this correspondent, and when encrypting mail. In every other message I reply to, in all my accounts, the previous material gets quoted in the reply. He is using
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:52.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/52.7.0
Is there a setting in CM (3.16.0) that I have missed, or is the problem at his end?

Subject: [Users] [Bug 4030] New: GPGME fails to decrypt with missing/false
MDC
Message-ID:
http://www.thewildbeast.co.uk/claws-mail/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=4030
Bug ID: 4030
Summary: GPGME fails to decrypt with missing/false MDC
Classification: Unclassified
Product: Claws Mail
Version: GIT
Hardware: PC
URL: https://dev.gnupg.org/T3714
OS: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Component: Plugins/Privacy/SMIME
Assignee: users at lists.claws-mail.org
Reporter: kardan at riseup.net
EXPECTED BEHAVIOR
Warn the user about the security risk and offer to decrypt nonetheless.
The dialogue could show a text similar to Werner's explanation:
"Not supporting MDC opens the path to somewhat tricky but possible attacks on
the ciphertext using the decryption tool as an oracle. For example Enigmails
auto-decrypt features makes this possible. This is why we finally decided to
let gpg, and GPGME, tell the caller that the decryption failed if MDC was not
used with a modern cipher." [https://dev.gnupg.org/T3714#109029]
ACTUAL BEHAVIOR
Decryption fails without explanation, the debug log shows:
sgpgme.c:504:can't decrypt (Entschlüsselung fehlgeschlagen)
(the string in parentheses comes from gpgme, which may or may not take it from
gnupg in the backend)
WORKAROUND
Add an action "gpg -d %u" and apply it to the message. The decrypted message
will be shown in a dialogue followed by "gpg: WARNUNG: Botschaft wurde nicht
integritätsgeschützt (integrity protected)".
IMPLEMENTATION
As discussed in IRC "currently it is impossible to say why it failed, the API
is simply not there". [It] "sounds like we're missing the gpgme equivalent
warning for "gpg: WARNING: message was not integrity protected". This was
discussed lately in context of e(html)fail on the gnupg list
[https://lists.gnupg.org/pipermail/gnupg-users/2018-May/060379.html].
Quoting Werner [https://dev.gnupg.org/T3714]:
DECRYPTION_INFO 0 9
The 0 tells you that there is no MDC. I have not checked whether we make this
available in the GPGME API. I will check that anyway in somedays because I am
currently adding AEAD support to gpg which will eventually replace MDC.
A specification is not everything and implementations sometimes even need to
ignore requirements. RFC4880 is over 10 years old and had a long drafting
process. New research showed that there are real world threats for non
authenticated messages and thus gpg now makes the MDC a hard requirement for
all algorithms for which we can assume that MDC has to be used. We hesitate to
require the MDC also for old algorithms (3DES, CAST5) because a lot of data has
been encrypted using them in the first years of OpenPGP.
The option
--ignore-mdc-error
This option changes a MDC integrity protection failure into a warning.
This can be useful if a message is partially corrupt, but it is necessary to
get as much data aspossible out of the corrupt message. However, be aware that
a MDC protection failure may also mean that the message was tampered with
intentionally by an attacker.
can be used as a workaround but the real solution is to fix
compliant-according-to-specs-only implementations. FWIW, we recently received a
draft of a paper for a novel attack which can only be avoided with the MDC.
TESTING
1) send yourself an uncrypted mail with attachment
2) save an uncrypted mail (with attachment to test SMIME) to the file email.eml
3) encrypt the file with: gpg -ea -r YOUR_KEY_ID email.eml
4) create a new message and insert (not attach) the encrypted email.eml.asc
(note the "gpg: WARNING: encrypting without integrity protection is dangerous")
5) open the encrypted mail with claws

Hi!
I'm using claws-mail with a Gmail pop3 account, and Google keeps
changing the certificate every time I check mail from this account. They
always switch between two different, "trusted" certificates. Maybe it's
an attempt to annoy people with alternative clients and bring more of
them to their web client.
Is there a way to save those certificates so claws-mail doesn't ask
every time I check mail?
Thanks!
Erich

Have a look at your account preferences, 'SSL/TLS' page, there is an
option to 'Automatically accept valid SSL/TLS certificates'.

Ah, this menu only has three items for me:
Never
Always
When message view is visible
I'm using claws-mail 3.14.1. I guess that the options you list are in a
newer version?
I guess i'll have to manually upgrade claws or wait until my distro
updates claws.
Thanks for your help.

Yes, this has been changed in 3.15.0. The drop-down menu you mention has
been replaced with the checkboxes Michael listed.

Hi,
I've found an instance of email attachment that does this.
And I think I've found the problem too:
I am using munpack to save the attachments, so this shows where the 'X' are coming from.
~/.claws-mail/ $ cat actionsrc
SavAtt: munpack -C ~/EmailAttachments -- %F
~/.claws-mail/ $ grep "SavAtt" menurc
; (gtk_accel_path "/Menu/Tools/Actions/SavAtt" "")
; (gtk_accel_path "/Menu/Tools/Actions/SavAtt" "")
And saving the file with the button above gives this log:
--- Ended: munpack -C ~/EmailAttachments -- "/mnt/z/home_source/sorted/ClawsMail/trash/1720"
tempdesc.txt: File exists
ASGENX558XMayX2018.pdf (application/pdf)
Here's the email:
[ASGEN 558 May 2018.pdf application/pdf (5541839 bytes)]
ASGEN 558 May 2018.pdf (application/pdf, 5.28MB):
The following can be performed on this part
by right-clicking the icon or list item:
- To save, select 'Save as...' (Shortcut key: 'Y')
- To display as text, select 'Display as text' (Shortcut key: 'T')
- To open with an external program, select 'Open' (Shortcut key: 'L')
(alternately double-click, or click the middle mouse button)
- Or use 'Open with...' (Shortcut key: 'O')
Here's 'ls -l' after :
4008 -rw------- 1 ken ken 4102400 May 18 12:49 ASGENX558XMayX2018.pdf
See the 'X' in the filename...
The attachment is quite big so I am forwarding you the message privately to avoid spamming the group.
However, it doesn't contain anything private so you can share it with anyone.
Thanks.

It looks like you'd have to recompile munpack from source to change
that character. The "X" is hard-coded in unixos.c, in the
os_newtypedfile function.

The use of X there is definitely a strange choice.. :-D.

That's stupid on their part - they should have given a command line
option to select the replacement char.
My choice would have been '_' , which is closest to space in the *nix
world.
Thanks for the lookup, that's points me in the right direction.

Message-ID:
http://www.thewildbeast.co.uk/claws-mail/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=4031
Bug ID: 4031
Summary: Error when attaching file with special characters in
path by drag'n drop
Classification: Unclassified
Product: Claws Mail
Version: 3.14.1
Hardware: PC
OS: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Component: UI/Compose Window
Assignee: users at lists.claws-mail.org
Reporter: jerome at jolimont.fr
When attaching a file by drag'n drop over the composition window, special
characters are replaced with spaces (I reproduced with '+', there may be other
characters).
Filename : "test+test"
Error : "File ///home/jerome/test test doesn't exist"
Likewise if the special character is in the directory name.
Things work fine if adding the file using the file selection window rather than
drag'n drop.
This can even be a security issue if file "test test" also exists because this
is the file that is being sent.
I'm using claws-mail (3.14.1-3) from Debian Stretch repo if that matters

Has there been a problem with the list server? I haven't received any
mail for about a month and I'm not getting any feedback when I try to
update my list settings.
Should I try to unsubscribe and resubscribe, or is that to much of a
Windows OS solution?

I'm not list admin, so can't give a definitive answer, but I've
received list mail for all that period.
>Should I try to unsubscribe and resubscribe, or is that to much of a

Just try subscribing; If already subscribed you /should/ get a reply
saying 'user with email address is already subscribed'. Unsubbing
probably won't work if you don't see responses, because you won't get
the confirmation request. In truth, the same applies if/when you
(re)subscribe.
Also check with your email provider to see if they're blocking list
mail (server-side spam folder perhaps). Deliberately or otherwise.

You can always see messages via a browser, in the archives
at:
http://lists.claws-mail.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/users
- maybe that's how you'll see this?

Headers no longer show a DKIM failure for mail flowing through
colino.net

I had problems with a provider at one point. To many bounces.
Not sure what the level is on bounces before you get turned off. I
noticed I wasn't getting any messages so I logged in, I believe it told
me the reason after logging in, which was to many bounces.
It didn't happen very often, but eventually I changed my email address
to another.
I would say at least log in to the list to see if there is a reason
listed as to why you are not getting list messages.
Chris.

problem is most likely that your provider uses cloudmark to set
spammer-lists. The IP the sends the user ML posts is on that list,
so the mails are blocked and moved to the spam folder or not
delivered at all :(
cloudmark claims this is a spam-source:

My ISP (nycap.rr.com) will not pass any mail from lists.claws-mail.org,
so I don't get the confirmation emails allowing me to unsubscribe from
my nycap.rr.com address or subscribe to my gmail address.
Since the webmail / archive workaround makes no more sense here than
anywhere else I won't be participating in this forum very much.
Hopefully, the maintainers will be able to rectify this without any
undue effort. I will try to get the ISP to deal with any perceived spam
problem in a more reasonable manner.
Thank you all for your sugestions.

Any effort on our part is undue.
Cloudmark are not responding to requests to remove the IP number.
But surely they break the GDPR by scanning people's emails without
any explicit opt-in, and also in their efforts to "create accurate,
comprehensive sender profiles".

At a (wild?) guess, Mike is in New York (based on his email address) so
unless I'm missing something GDPR won't apply, since that affects only
the EU.

But the list server is in the EU, and so are people who post to the
list. Cloudmark also operate in the EU, not just in the USA.

Understood. However, as long as Cloudmark do their stuff in the USA,
there's really bugger-all the EU can do about it.

Rather than being "completely fucked up", as you call it, it can actually be a
convenient way to step through new/unread mails in a folder. It opens a msg,
scrolls through the msg, and then opens the next new or unread msg.

It however means that if you press space one more time than required you jump
to some random place in the inbox and there is no way to get back to what you
were reading.
I call that fucked up interface.

No, it's not random. It goes to the next unread or new msg.

Which has nothing to do with the message I am viewing or even the part of the
summary I am viewing.
So to put it another way - how do I display the message selected in the summary
*without* the possibility of the selection randomly jumping somewhere
completely else?

Those work once the message is displayed. I was asking about loading the
selected message into the messageview.
