Ok, did that and restated claws, still had 90 listed in Inbox ans 6 in Sent.

However, when I "clicked" on those items both cleared to zero! Probably, 
had I done that an hour ago I would have saved a lot of effort ...

Well now I should have a clean claws installation to create filters for 
again now that I have some understanding of the procedure.
