My messages are sent as plain text, so they don't
contain HTML/CSS tags.

Do you have Preferences->Message View->Text
Options->Render HTML messages as text checked? That
normally attempts to display text without the extra
HTML gibberish.

If even that doesn't help you can save the HTML
message and display it in a browser. However bear in
mind that this may have security and privacy
implications (e.g. you may be tracked through an
image).
