Addendum regarding the selection of messages:

The MacOS mail.app, for example, remembers your last selection in a folder and
will reselect that message the next time you open that folder. If a message is
removed by another IMAP client and mail.app thus cannot reselect it, it simply
does not select a message at all.

If message selection is handled like that, it makes sense to have the maill
program scroll to the position of the reselected message. If no message is
selected, it should scroll all the way up or down in the list, depending on
whether newest messages are set to be shown at the bottom or the top.
