Hello Claws team -

A few weeks ago my address book was somehow clobbered and Claws is complaining about
a bad index to the address file. I've looked at .bak files and they look like this
<below>, but when saved-as this file to the addrbook--index.xml file the app still
throws up the message about a bad index .  Any thoughts?

Claws mail error at startup

Hello,

I'm the maintainer of claws mail on Mageia (mga). Due to the lateness of mageia
6, we made a jump from claws 3.11.1 to 3.15.0.

After the upgrade, we got reports
(https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20970) of segfault during startup if
claws is used with a profile from mga5 (I attach the error message). A new
profile doesn't have the problem.

I remarked than v3.14 modify accountrc and clawsrc and if I reflect the

there is a header called X-UI-Filterresults .
I am curious to know what it is for?
And more importantly, is there some kind of processing rule I can use to
delete it?
I ask the latter not because I don't know how to use grep -v, but
because it spans multiple lines of the input and I don't want to blindly
use head and tail and hope that the header remains in the same place
every email.

Any header whose name starts "X-" is non-standard.  It's common to find
X-
headers in emails, added either by the recipient's mail provider (which
I'd
expect is what has happened here), or in some cases by systems the mail 
has passed through on its way from the sender.

One can only guess that this header means something to your mail
provider,
who presumably run some sort of filtering of mail on your behalf. 
You'll 
need to ask them why they sent it to you in such an unreadable (and thus
useless to you) form.

The text in the header looks to me as if it is base64-encoded; I tried
pasteing 
it into a decoder, but it didn't turn into a plain text description of
anything.

Sorry,  don't know.  I wouldn't expect the fact that it spans multiple
lines 
to matter though.  Any code that can parse header contents (perhaps to 
remove one) has to be able to cope with multiline headers.

Can you get a full backtrace with symbols of the crash?

Mageia's bug traceback is suspiciously similar to a recently closed Debian bug
https://bugs.debian.org/868700 which appeared to be caused by old libraries.

 - a quick, short-term solution, reverting the mentioned commit and bringing
back the original imap_folder_get_path() function,
 - a long-term solution, separating accounts config_version update (with
per-account config_version, or a global one on top of accountrc file), and

Dummy profile

Dummy profile created with claws 3.11 on mageia 5 which exhibit the crash when
used on mageia 6 with claws 3.15.0


Like with my personnal profile, if I edit accountrc (protocol=3 => 1) and
clawsrc (add config_version=2) the crash disappears.

fix the crash by adding error handling code to gethostbyname

The program will crash when setting a wrong host.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Load the plugin.
Configuration -> Plugins -> Load -> clams.so -> Open -> Close

2. Set a wrong host name.
Configuration -> Preferences -> Plugins -> Clam AntiVirus -> check Enable virus
scanning -> uncheck Automatic configuration -> Remote Host: WrongHost -> Port:
10010 -> Apply

The reason is that there is no error handling code after calling function
"gethostbyname". 

The following patch will solve this problem.

should be excluded by default when per-folder notification is not enabled.

This patch does not seem to completely solve the problem. Applying patch simply
make claws crash somewhere else with the following error message:
Process terminating with default action of signal 5 (SIGTRAP)

This (untested) patch will likely fix this bug.
Wiping all passwords is not an option, because it does just that.

When compiled with SVG support, the apply button on themes preferences is
re-enabled after changing any SVG related checkbox, so user can view the result
on UI. The second time it crashes with the following backtrace:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open themes' preferences
2. Change theme
3. Apply
4. Modify SVG options, e.g. disable "Automatic" scaling and change value of DPI
5. Apply

This happen with both pixmap and scalable themes, so it seems not related with
SVG support, though you have to have it enabled to be able to trigger it.

Short term fix would be to disable the possibility of re-applying themes
without leaving the preferences dialog. Long term would be investigate what's
happening with the pixmaps and why this low level function is crashing.

A workaround suggestion...

Empty the history file(s) and make it/them read-only.  CM will still show
history entries since it was started; but won't be able to save them for
the next startup.

fix build failures with slibtool

The following description comes from one of our users whose email address never
received a confirmation mail from the bugzilla system, so I'm filing this bug
on his behalf. The attached patch should fix the problem in git master - please
ensure attribution goes to the patch author (that info is in the patch itself)
rather than to me. Quoted text from user follows:


With the recent addition of slibtool to SBo I found that claws-mail did
not compile with it. After some investigation with the help of the
slibtool upstream it was discovered there are two bugs in the claws-mail
configure.ac. The more permissive libtool in Slackware swallows these
errors while slibtool will result in a build error.

In short the issues are:

1. The configure script contains ARCHIVE_LIBS=ARCHIVE_CFLAGS while
ARCHIVE_CFLAGS is not a variable nor does it exist.

2. There is a potentially bad sed that will try to remove -lc, but
instead it finds -lcrypt and then gives 'rypt' to gcc which is not a
correct build flag.

worked already very good this year, to get rid of an idiot on several
Linux mailing lists. I would bet that it's a real human, not a robot,
nothing got hacked at all, just somebody manually subscribes again and
again. The spoiling attacks on many mailing list, by an idiot who
claimed something about grsecurity, vanished after moderating/closing
mailing lists.

I have turned on "Thread view", such that threads are displayed.  I sort by
date (old to new, downwards).  When there is a reply from an old message, the
sorting is still on the root message.  I think it is better if the thread is
reordered such that it is treated as the most recent message when the thread
contains the newest message in the folder.

Greetings all!

I recently switched from Thunderbird to Claws.  Thunderbird seems to
have devolved into a big mess, so I've found Claws to be a breath of
fresh air.  Thank you!

Since the Notification plugin doesn't work properly with Gmail IMAP (I
know, it's Google's fault, but I need notifications anyway) I have
created filters that do an okay job notifying me of new messages.  

I am having some issues when displaying something with 'notify-send'
and libnotify on Ubuntu Linux 64-bit. Here is the filter rule I'm using:

* Condition: unread

* Action: execute "aplay /home/will/Sounds/Media/notify.wav &" execute
  "notify-send -t 0 'New mail from: %f' 'Subject: %s'"

The sound plays fine and the notification pops up, but there are a
bunch of backslashes in the text.  For example, the 'notify-end' pop-up
says:

> New mail from: Will\ Brokenbourgh\\<myemail\@gmail\.com\>
> Subject: Its time to test your e-mail client!

If there is an apostrophe in the Subject, the pop-up doesn't display at
all. (I'm guessing 'notify-send' is getting a broken parameter)

Does anyone have any guidance as to how I can keep 'notify-send'
happy and *not* show all these backslashes?  I tried with various
permutations of quotes and backslashes, but nothing I tried helped.
I'm also a bit confused about when to use \" and \ by itself.

I tripped over yet another oddity of using claws (version 3.14.1 on
Debian jessie) with gmail.

For other accounts, I can start a draft email and leave it open. If I
close claws, claws also closes the draft. When I re-open claws, the
draft is re-opened. I use this feature to remind me to finish and send
the draft.

When I close and then re-open claws with drafts on my gmail account
open, claws does not re-open the drafts. This means that I have not
gotten reminders of several draft emails in progress.

Is there anything I can do to fix that problem?

I just did a simple, straightforward experiment. The draft email did
re-open. So this may be an intermittent problem. Or I may be crazy.

Isn't that unchecking "Scan for new mail" in the General options of the
folder's properties?

Thanks for your quick reply.

I just disabled this checkbox and used “apply to subdirectories”, per your
suggestion, but it does not seem to have an effect.

I opened “tcpdump” to monitor the claws traffic and I see several
packets to and from the IMAP server each time I change directory. Moreover,
there is the noticeable delay associated with networking (as opposed to
working with local files).

I note that am using Claws Mail 3.14.1 as shipped in Debian 9, in case this
has some relation.

No, it checks the server but does not download all the messages.
This is IMAP, try toggling to offline mode.

So does it only check for new message headers? Does the IMAP specification
mandate this behavior from the e-mail client?

I only want to disable the automatic check for new message (whether it is
downloading or whatever else Claw does) every time I change directory,
because it makes Claw very unresponsive. If I use the offline mode, then I
can not even download messages using the “Get Mail” button, and this is an
undesired restriction worse than the original problem.

How can I configure Claws so that when I reply to a message, I want it to
be put in the same directory than the message I am replying to, and for
messages which are not a reply, it is sorted according to the
filters that I have configured already (as if it was an incoming message).

I classify my mail into directories, one per each mailing list that I am
in. Currently whenever I reply to a mailing list, my reply ends in the
“sent” directory instead of the directory corresponding to the mailing
list. This is very annoying.

For each folder|directory you wish to behave in this manner.

From within claws-mail:
* Right click on the folder and select "Properties"
* Under "Page Index" select "Compose"
* Check the box "Save copy to this folder instead of Sent"
* Apply the change

It's NORMAL to have to login to an SMTP server so that when it sends
your email
on your behalf, it has a reasonable belief that it knows who you are and
thus that
the emails you send through it can be attributed to you.

The mechanism is in particular used by mail providers who allow people
to send
emails from any 'from address'.    For example my emails' from-addresses
have 
nothing to do with the ISP I use to connect to the internet.  Reputable
senders
need to know who is sending email, so they can attempt to prevent spam
from 
being sent by their systems.

If use the 'Get Mail' button when in offine mode you will see the
'Offline warning' dialogue, asking you whether you want to override
the setting and fetch mail. So how is that worse?

subsequently, clicking a folder makes contact with the server, with the
associated slowness.

Thus this solves nothing. It is simply as if it had not enabled offline
mode in the first place.

Crash Output

I get a segfault mentioning several failed assertions with "path != NULL
failed" when trying to start claws using my copied configuration and email
folders from an older version of the program (3.13.2, recently updated Ubuntu).
I'm using Arch now, but I went ahead and compiled both the 3.13.2 and 3.15.0
versions from your archives. The older one opens normally -- the newer one
crashes with the same data.

I realize that's quite a leap, so I'll compile some more versions when I get a
chance to try to narrow it down. I've attached the output from the crash.

I'd like to know if there's any easy way to fix my configuration files or
folders without dumping them and starting over.

I'm trying to do some text processing on a selection of messages and
display the result.

Is it possible to get the message body as a string in python plugin
scripts? I can open the FilePath and parse it but I'm not sure that's
the best approach because I expect that clawsmail has already parsed it.

The other thing I'd like to know is how to edit/replace the contents of
the message view area - is that possible?  It would be nice to avoid
opening a new window for the script's output.

It seems that Claws applies "fg" as a color of text, not "text".

See attached image. I've changed "fg" color for Tree* widgets to red to better
highlight the issue and in theme preview it displays correctly, fg used for
column titles, "text" for text (I've used gtk-theme-switch2 as an example).

Now in Claws as you can see it uses fg instead of text which makes it
unreadable if theme have light-on-dark column headers but dark-on-light content

Patch fixing the issue.

When new emails arrive, the summary list is updated and the read
threads are removed if the option 'Hide read threads' is checked.

However, if you are reading the last email of a thread, then it
automatically goes to the next email. If the new selected email
happens to be the last read in a thread, then the next update
will do the same even though the user might not have seen that
message yet.

Attaching a patch that fixes the issue for me.

Yes. Just select Cc: _before_ starting to enter the address you want as
Cc:, Bcc:, etc,  When you then type the address, current & subsequent
fields will be what you selected...  By changing the first field before
typing anything, they can all be Cc:

Some, although our production server is still on SOGo 2 at the moment.
It seems to work fine, as long as you Receive in claws-mail before you
start processing mail and Process any pending actions before you switch
back to SOGo. Anything specific?

All of my calendars, etcetera have always been handled by MS Outlook. I am
using MS Outlook 2016 at present.

I am just wondering how I could migrate things over to claws-mail. I have
never used SOGo before. I did visit the site and found that SOGo3 was the
latest version. Presently, I am using Postfix to receive mail and then hand it
over to Dovecot.

They go on Claws Mail's stderr, so you can see them when you start
Claws Mail from the console. Of course, you could also catch and
handle them differently than sending to stderr...

You get some information that Claws Mail has cached about the message
(like subject and flags) as attributes of the MessageInfo class
instance. If you need the full body, it's actually best to take the
file path and parse it yourself (or rather, use standard Python
email modules to do it for you).

No. I am not sure if it'd be a good idea to let scripts put random
stuff in the message view.. You'd have to open your own window for your
output.

I've just setup a new (2nd hand) laptop with claws-mail 3.15.0 which
seems to be working fine when I start it afresh. However, I have copied
my complete ~/.claws-mail/ directory from my previous laptop which is
still working fine (claws-mail 3.13.1). When I start claws-mail on the
new machine with the "old" config directory claws segfaults when
loading it with the following errors (and some stack traces):

Should I be allowed to simply copy the config dir from one machine to
another (they're both running near-identical versions of slackware)?
All the accounts that are set up are IMAP and the imapcache folder was
also copied across (rsync). Any ideas what might be causing the crash?

Okay, this might be a claws issue, it might be a window manager
issue (xfce4), but I don't see it in any other application.

I have claws mail set to auto-start with my desktop session, but
while I can read (and either via menu or control-o) move emails
between folders, "drag and drop" moving of emails doesn't work.
(you drag to destination, but it 'snaps back' and doesn't move).

Close claws and restart (in the same session) and it's works fine.

So it looks like some sort of interaction between xfce4 starting 
up and claws starting up. Annoying, but tolerable. Has anyone
else seen this?

Hi Trevor,

Maybe you need ~/Mail directory I've copied both directories to my new laptop
and it work just fine.

The only issue I have is that when I open directory in Claws-Mail it load all
emails which take time and it mark all of them as unread.

Did you follow the directions on this URL:
https://help.aol.com/articles/how-do-i-use-other-email-applications-to-send-and-receive-my-aol-mail

I use Port 587 with TLS for SMTP and Port 993 with SSL for IMAP. Make sure you
are using the correct servers.

Which I expect to work as follows;

Identify the header X-Spam-Status does not have the string LDOSUBSCRIBER
in it and mark that message with colour label 11.

What actually happens is that it matches all messages.

Is my rule wrong, or have I hit a bug?

This release is made from a branch. The branch was based on 3.15.0
with a few cherry-picked bug fixes.

Git version claws-mail-3.15.0git130 gives you everything that is in
3.15.1 plus more.

Yes, my meaning was the changes that are in the 3.15.0git series rather
than in the new 3.15.1 branch. I wasn't suggesting that these bug fixes
were not stable.

A normal (not a bug-fix only) release takes some time to co-ordinate,
with translation updates and whatnot. We wanted to rush out a new
release that fixes a bug that was biting a few people, a nasty bug:

	o bug 3855, 'segfault at startup with old profile and IMAP
		     account'

So this was the way to do it.

Fix use after free in imap_session_authenticate()

The function imap_session_authenticate() in imap.c uses a pointer after freeing
it:

        if (acc_pass != NULL) {
            g_free(acc_pass);
            memset(acc_pass, 0, strlen(acc_pass));
        }

Attached is a patch (adapted from an openSUSE patch by Ricardo Mones) to fix
the issue.

Hi!

I think its not new idea here. Claws is my favourite message app and
only what I'm strongly missing is ability to add short notes to the
messages.

It could be arranged easily (i suppose), putting notes visible same way
as we see tags - on the message pane above From and To fields with
yellow background. One button to the toolbar which opens note
compositor window with Cancel, OK and Clear buttons. I think, in
backend it can be stored same way as tags are stored.

What do you think is it feasible ?

I think it's a never-seen-before topic here, totally new to me at
least. I'm not sure a single 1% of the user base would need/use it, nor
even if the dev team would consider this positively. Let's wait for
other replies, but I don't bet on it or push to it, personally.

My bet is that users would want to add notes to a rather
small number of messages, but perhaps I'm alone in my
"drinking from the fire hose" email situation.

How about being able to add an "email reply to self":
an email reply message that only goes to yourself? That
should be pretty straightforward, in fact I've (accidentally)
done it plenty of times when forgetting to "reply all". That
way the original email can get quoted and be part of your
note. 

It would be the email equivalent of the paper: memo to self.

Besides implementing a notes manager within Claws Mail, which is
feasible but probably requires more thrust than available, there's also
the possibility of integrating with an existing notes manager, e.g.:

Maybe not the "neatest" solution, but I have mapped Shift-Meta-E to
"Edit Message", and just add it in with something like

Disadvantage is that signed messages loose their validness on the
signature, but then I just delete the signature. I can live with that.

FWIW it is no less clean than using the "Delete Attachments" plugin,
which I use all the time to get rid of company logo's and HTML parts

likely installed automatically, when you installed claws, so the
package management might recommend to remove those dependencies, but
they are also needed for the claws-mail-git package, so consider to do

If I send an e-mail To: someone, with the Reply-To: field set, claws will warn

That is not true - Reply-To isn't a recipient, so the warning is a little

Hi,

Is Fancy still operational in 3.15.1?

On archlinux (which I use), the claws available has Fancy not
included and instead it uses Dillo (which I don't like).

If Fancy is still supported/working then I'll do my own compile...

....some distros have removed it because of security issues with one of
the libraries (I forget which one) Fancy uses.

archlinux is still at: 2.4.11-6 and Catanzaro says (6-Aug-2017) that
it should be 2.16.3 to fix many of the security problems.

Arch has dropped webkitgtk for security reasons:

I wonder how did this happen. AFAIK we do not support Dillo plugin, and
do not include it in release tarballs - did Arch packager modify
the sources and added the plugin back on their own?

Yep, I found this too in the meantime. :) I wonder if they know that
the plugin is unsupported, and is in fact less safe to use than Fancy,
given that it can not block loading remote HTML content?

And if so, do they inform users of this Archlinux package about this
fact?
