I'd like to say "Works for me, even with kmail installed". I am using
KDE 5.28 on Debian Testing, and following command in systemsettings:

  claws-mail --compose "%u"



Version of my (totally unused and unusable) kmail:
$ kmail --version
kmail2 5.2.3
