Thanks for the explanation, Paul.

It seems clear that the problem is with xdg-open rather than with claws
(or perhaps with some configuration that affects xdg-open), so I've
taken the question to the openSUSE list. It's just the URL that
matters, not the rest of the email.

I'll let you know here when I eventually solve the issue.
