I would suggest that your keyboard is the problem (down cursor key sticking) and you have "Mark message as read when selected, after [ 0 ] seconds" set in Configuration -> Preferences -> Display -> Summaries -> Set that to the; "Only when opened in a new window or when replied to" option, and it will never happen again.
