Thanks Ricardo.  To answer the non-ASCII issue, the password contains
upper/lower alpha + 0-9 + shift[0-6]

After posting the question, she mentioned that she also uses Google's
2-step verification because she does virtual book-keeping/accounting for
various clients in remote cities.  Convinced her to turn that off to at
least get initially connected; but every time she tried, Google returned a
"something went wrong" (paraphrased) message. 
Her password does work if she tries POP; so this may be the 2-step
verification...  is this supported?
