For anyone reading this, the slowness problem was due to the notification
daemon (xfce4-notifyd in my case) not running. I found this by running
claws-mail from the command line and seeing many "libnotify-WARNING **: Failed
to connect to proxy" messages. A bit of googling led me to the solution.

I'm still getting the annoying behavior of focusing the previous message
instead of the following upon deletion, though. I'm digging through the
configuration options to find whether there's something related.
