PS:

Could it be an issue related to the prefix? IOW perhaps the expected
location of the plugin might be

  /usr/lib/claws-mail/plugins/

but you perhaps installed to

  /usr/local/lib/claws-mail/plugins/

maybe you only need to unload and after that to load the plugin again.
