I don't know how the behaviour is for < 3.13, for 3.13 it's

sort by date/thread date ascending  n=cursor down=to newer mail 
                                    p=cursor up  =to older mail
sort by date/thread date descending n=cursor down=to older mail
                                    p=cursor up  =to newer mail
