A state of Unread *and* New changes folder colour (here at least) as
well as emboldening text.  Once you enter the folder and leave, the New
status is removed, of course, but bold remains.  At this point, colour
also reverts to the usual folder colour, but the Unread message column in
the folder list display will still show a number>0.

For me, those indicators are enough.
