IIUC you're running Iceweasel on another workspace than Claws. You
click a link in a Claws mail.

I'm not using LXDE and Iceweasel, but openbox (likely the WM you're
using with LXDE) and Firefox (it's Iceweasel without Debian bugs). If I
click on a link in a Claws mail, then the workspace still needs to be
selected manually, but Firefox's switches automatically to the new tab.

openbox 3.5.2, firefox 38.0.1, claws-mail 3.11.1.r100.gf3d3586

What commands did you try? What app versions are you using?

Too funny, Firefox > Edit > General "When I open a link in a new
tab, switch to it immediately" is _not_checked, but it switches
automatically. However, it also works, when it's checked.

Claws > Configuration > Preferences... > Message View > External
Programs "Use system defaults when possible" is unchecked and the
command to run is firefox '%s'.

Perhaps you need to enable "Use system defaults ..." and LXDE then
does the job automatically.

You could use a wrapper for Firefox that first runs Firefox and then
wmctrl -s1, were the 1 could be replaced to switch to the wanted
workspace.

It only looks like a tape-recorder. It's actually a pen.
So you can write with it and no one will know.
