Perhaps you need to correct the settings in:

Configuration > Edit Accounts... > double click an account > Account >
SSL

Or you might need this:

Configuration > Edit Accounts... > double click an account > Account >
Send > [x] Authenticate with POP3 before sending

Assumed it is already checked, try a shorter timeout.
