I'm either not explaining myself well, or you're misunderstanding me;

Nothing in config file pertaining to threading, I get default behaviour
(threaded).

I never change the default, still nothing in config file regarding
threading so I see threaded mail.

Default behaviour is changed to non-threaded.

By doing *nothing* I see a change.

Bad.

Now, I'm not saying CM behaves that way.  I don't remember, it's been
*years* since I installed it.  But the point remains;  Changing the
default may impact many existing users.
