And voila, the reporter I referred to in the previous comment also ran into the
invalid hook on mail_postfiltering_hooklist:

So, we have two issues that may have something in common: (1) An invalid hook
getting called. (2) The NewMail plugin's hook getting called when it doesn't
have a valid log file ptr because e.g. it failed to open the file.
