Thank you Paul, that worked perfectly.

My problem was that instead of calling the style "user-font" I had
called it "schrift", which I'd gotten out of a Google search. "schrift"
works perfectly for enlarging the fonts in Thunar, but failed miserably
in Claws-Mail. Changing "schrift" to "user-fonts" enabled both to have
large, readable fonts (I used 16 point instead of 8 point).
