You see, for me the matter is not about a good-looking or ugly theme. 
It's about colors. My eyes suffer from eyestrain and get sore when I use 
a black-on-white theme. so I need a black or dark theme. It's a 
necessity for me (an for many other users).
As far as I know, the only way to do that in Claws Mail is to change the 
Gtk, that is why I was asking about it.

The ideal solution, at this point, would be: letting the user choose the 
interface colors without having to rely necessarily on the Gtk theme. 
Or, in other words, give the user the option to override the color of 
the Gtk theme, via local settings in the CM menu.
Otherwise, give at least the user an easy way to chose between the Gtk 
themes.
I am not sure what you mean by "hidden preference", but if it does the 
trick and solves the problem, then it's ok by me.
I hope you do it soon.
