Thanks for chiming in.

3.8.0 is the latest version available on Ubuntu. I'll try compiling from source
or installing a .deb of 3.9.0 to see if I can replicate this problem.

The excessive time might be due to a slow connection. Still, Claws should
handle it gracefully, and not freeze the client until it finishes or gives up.
