Still haven't got it working the way it used to work, but first an
update. I now have Claws Mail 3.8.0 on my Fedora 16 x86_64 computer
using Xfce desktop environment, and Firefox is now 11.0.

I should also add that my main browser is Firefox, and I always have at
least four windows open, each with half a dozen tabs, and all are
normally minimized.

It used to be that when I clicked on a link in a mail message it would
bring up the most recent window (un-minimize it), open a new tab, and
open the link in the new tab.

I have tried tweaking the line in Preferences > External Programs as
follows:

firefox %s
Opens the link in a new tab in Firefox, but does not restore
focus and un-minimize the window. I have to un-minimize each
window to find the new tab.

firefox --newtab %s
Opens a new tab in a new un-minimized window, but does not load
	the link.

In addition, clicking on a link in a web page in Firefox opens the link
in a new tab and shifts focus to the new tab. In other words, Firefox is
working as it should be.

It seems to me that the problem is the syntax in the Preferences >
External Programs window. I need to tweak "firefox --newtab %s" (as
above) so that it doesn't just open a new window and a new tab, but
also opens the link in the new tab. What syntax will do this?
