LOL.
Yes, seriously, if I were hard pressed to choose, I would rather have
Google know all about me than letting the contacts in my addressbook
read my current IP address.
Google, and all other servers, will know everything about you anyway,
but have no special interest in you as an individual. You are just a
statistics, one in hundreds of millions. By contrast, I see it as much
more threatening that my employer or other people I know can so easily
read my current IP address in all my emails, for the reasons I hinted to
earlier.
Which one would you rather choose?
>To summarize your request (and also for me, if I understood you
right): Basically all you want is not using the SMTP protocol but,
somehow sending the email via the web interface... This sounds like you
do not even want to see the web interface, you just care about hiding
your IP address.
That's exactly right. Not wanting to see the web interface is just for
making things smoother, seamless for the user. But that is no problem in
itself.
>Just use Tor, if you really care that much about being tracked by your
IP address. What you suggest is a hacked solution, as any change in the
web-interface basically renders the plugin into a broken state, as this
is not a public API... I'm not a developer of claws-mail, but I'm
programming from time to time, and I know that I would never ever
implement something like your request, as it is damned for being broken
90% of the time. It's like changing the source code every second/third
day (at least if you support more than just gmail)
You have got a point there. I'll have to consider the Tor solution, if
none of you guys picks up my proposal.
However, the Webmail Notifier add-on in Thunderbird does work, and when
the web interface changes, it is duly updated (yes, I know, it's a pain
in the neck for the maintainer, but...). "90% of the time" is a bit of
an exaggeration, though, because Thunderbird's add-on (which already
implements part of what I proposed) works fine most of the time.
