I downloaded evince. I finally got it to display a pdf. It failed
to load tex, html, dvi etc. The same routine appeared. The printer makes
noises but nothing appears. So the fault lies with gtk+ as you
state. I have other packages that use gtx etc. (Inkscape) but
they do not share the same fault.
The system I am using, Slackware and Salix, is not a Debian
descendent. But slapt-get, a Salix tool, says gtk+ is up to date.
Do you know what version of gtk+ is needed by Claws Mail? Mine is
apparently verson -2.0. I have a file gtk+-unix-print-2.0.pc
