What works for me is:
Set sort order to "ascending"
Set sort order to "by date"
Set "Thread view"
In Settings -> Display -> Summaries -> Show "no unread (or new) message" dialog -> Assume 'No'

That way shift+n or shift+p remains in the current folder. There is no popup for shift+p if the end is reached. Selecting another folder is done with shift+g.
