Some people don't exit apps before they shut down the machine. Some
desktop environment then will automatically start those apps next time,
without the need to explicitly add them to the auto-start apps. I guess
this shouldn't be considered as a dirty exit. The DE likely sends a
signal that allows the app to terminate with saving it's state.

FWIW I don't make usage of such a feature.
