I understand. More clearly, I was suggesting you to assign "Suppr" as a
shortcut to the "Edit > Delete thread" menu item. 
That would even save you the need to collapse the thread... Of course, the
drawback is that you have to define something different if you want to
delete a message.

And obviously, as already suggested, if none of all the "solutions"
proposed suits you, you are free to download the source code and patch it.
