I got rid of HTML by

Configuration > Preferences... > Message View > Text Options >
[x] Render HTML messages as text

A note to the OP:

If reinstalling software would purge data in /home, it would be a
completely wrong and dangerous behaviour.

I use several POP accounts and filters, using one parent mail
folder only.

For me there are 3 folders in $HOME:

$ ls -hAld .claws-mail/ Claws\ Mail/ .signatures/
drwx------ 12 rocketmouse rocketmouse 4.0K Jan 10 14:47 .claws-mail/
drwx------ 15 rocketmouse rocketmouse 4.0K Nov 12 09:05 Claws Mail/
drwxr-xr-x  2 rocketmouse rocketmouse 4.0K Jan  7 02:20 .signatures/

You likely don't have a folder .signatures/ and the parent mail folder
likely has got a different name. As others already pointed out, mv or
rm -r the config folder .claws-mail/ and the parent mail folder.
